The overall mission of ENS is to be a distributed naming system for domains based on Ethereum’s blockchain. The main goal is to essentially make domains readable for both humans and machine-based identifiers like an alphanumeric Ethereum wallet address. Additionally, ENS supports reverse resolution that makes metadata like canonical names associated with Ethereum addresses. Similar to the DNS, which is the internet’s Domain Name Service which hosts websites like many of the ones we’re familiar with today (Google and Amazon). Similar to DNS, ENS operates with a hierarchy that allows the main domain owner to also own any of the subdomains that stem from it. The highest-level domains that end in suffixes like .eth and .test are owned by smart contracts that are called registrars. These registrars can specify rules for the governance of subdomains.
